The Pink Room

Filed under: Around the Home, Sewing for the Littles, Vintage Lovelies — littleredwren @ 5:02 pm

My lucky bird earned herself a new pink room a few months ago. We had installed new carpet early last year after a run in with a kinked dishwasher pipe while we were out of town one weekend. It was a blessing in disguise because our old carpet had been abused by my sweet little boy who spat up upon every square inch of our carpeting as a baby. We decided to get this darker color carpet to mask future stains (best decision ever). The only hitch is that it made Wren’s room look like a cave with her brown walls. So I bribed her through a rough fit stage with the promise of a new pink room once she filled up a giant marble jar.

I love how it is coming together. Her adorable rainbow blanket was crocheted by her nana when I was pregnant. My mom was addicted to crocheting for a while and let the daughters choose a baby blanket from a book she had. Until I chose this one, which is comprised of like a million hexagons which all had to be seamed together. Then she started choosing which ones she made. Bwahaha. I don’t regret it, even a little. I LOVE Wren’s rainbow blanket and since rainbows are one of her favorite things, so does she.

I thrifted this puppy recently. Greg is going to restore it some weekend. It is cute now but it is going to be even cuter after. Consider this a ‘before’ shot.

I wanted to make some curtains to tie in the yellow in her rocker, the one that used to be in my room as a girl. I found this vintage sheet and knew it was just the thing.

You can see how they almost dust the top of her dresser here. I love the length for her little girl room. Feels vintagey and sweet to me. Dresser was a garage sale steal. It came with a gorgeous upright piece that we passed along to my dad.

A couple of love letters for Wren, made by mommy.

Her nightstand. I scored that sweet phone about a decade ago at an estate sale. My mom has a red one that I covet but the green one works better in the pink room.

The mermaid print was hands-down Wren’s favorite part of her new room. I had been gathering a few new pieces for once her room got painted and we set it all up while she was having a bath one night. She freaked over the print. She loves mermaids but they HAVE to have red hair like her. You can find the mermaid print here.

This is my favorite part of the room. It is a rotating art exhibit, although I have a hard time taking the old art down to replace it. I love this solution and am sure Van will end up with the same thing in his room soon.

Daddy built her a dress up section for her closet, just at her height. I only get to see her in non-dress ups when we go out somewhere, so this was a necessary function.

Greg also contributed his old expedit shelf from his office (he went back to school last month – shout out to our hardworking, straight A student daddy!).

I took these photos a couple weeks ago and the room has already changed a bit. I’ll have to post an update or two, maybe once the desk is refinished!

Pillows

I couldn’t pass up these pristine springtime vintage pillowcases. I bought them for the little, but she turned her nose up at them. So I talked my husband into letting them onto our bed until she got jealous enough to want them for herself. It took 2 hours.

A Collection

Filed under: Vintage Lovelies — littleredwren @ 12:22 am

When I stumbled across a vintage thermos at a garage sale last summer, I began obsessing over what I thought would be an original collection. But I guess either it was a once-you-buy-a-certain-car-you-notice-everyone-else-has-one kind of situation or perhaps the internet decided thermos collections were cool at the same exact moment I did. Either way, they are. And mine is growing.

(They are still broken up around the home because I don’t have enough to constitute a real collection yet. Maybe by Fall.)

Thrifty Win

I have a few items on my “must find” thrift/ garage sale list for the season. One was a brass headboard for the little girl’s room so we could finally upgrade her toddler bed to a twin. I spied a head/footboard combo a couple weeks ago at my new favorite shop. 20 bucks for the set and I was nearly beside myself. Even better? They are the same exact height so we can use them for matching headboards someday for a shared sibling room. RAD.

Sheets: Thrifted.

Duvet: New, Thrifted Ikea

Quilt: Reverse side of Back in the Saddle by yours truly.

My favorite season

Filed under: Vintage Lovelies — littleredwren @ 10:42 pm

No, not Spring. Definitely not Summer. Garage Sale season. I have a lot of things on my hope list, including more vintage children’s numbers like the ones I found last summer. The little old lady who was selling them looked at me like I was nuts when I was toting my baby boy on my hip and purchased these beauties.

I had actually picked them up to resell but then decided against it. How hard would I have to kick myself if I have another baby someday and it happens to be a girl? So until that third (and last) baby comes out with an extra body part, I think I’ll hold on to these.

Oh yes…

Did I mention this little gem I found for two dollars?

This was my first find of the day and I never knew how much I needed a preschooler sized avocado green baseball mitt until I met this one.

More Thrifting

Filed under: Vintage Lovelies — littleredwren @ 9:39 am

Here is some of the rest of my haul from earlier this week:

Pretty Pyrex. I also got a large green mixing bowl that is currently being washed.

Some pretty fabric. The top piece is Marimekko (!) and the middle piece is just about as rad as it gets.

A complete twin sized sheet set for the future. Or for cutting up and quilting. Yeah, probably that one.

Thrifty Tuesdays

Recently my sister and I started switching off homepreschooling our three year olds once a week. I had my first week of dropping off and hoo boy, did I live the hour and a half up. The boy-child and I hit up some local thrift stores that I had never been to, and I have been missing out. A taste:

More pics to follow.

Let me tell you a little tale

Filed under: Vintage Lovelies — littleredwren @ 1:24 pm

Seven years ago, I painted our guest bathroom red. It was the most annoying room I have ever painted. It was a TON of cutting in (which I am terrible at) and it took FOUR coats (plus touch ups) to cover evenly. Plus, the paint bled through the tape on the baseboards so not only was it a huge pain, it didn’t look very professional.

So basically ever since, I have disliked that bathroom. It wasn’t long after that I decided red walls didn’t completely fit my tastes, but I lacked the courage to repaint that stupid bathroom. Finally we bit the bullet and bought a can of gray paint last September. And in our garage it sat. And sat. And sat.

A few days ago Greg looked at me after the kids were tucked in and asked what I wanted to do. I told him this was our chance. We had a couple hours alone, and I had motivation. Finally. So we painted. The bathroom is right next to the kids’ rooms so we whispered our conversations. It was fun. So pretty much the night and day from my last experience painting that room.

I chose a lighter shade than I was naturally drawn to and it makes the room feel much bigger than it had as a dark red cave. And gray is the perfect backdrop for our babies’ Blue Lily portraits. Of course, if we had more time and money (and that elusive motivation) there are other things we would change about this room. But I’m good for now.
